The 9th Athens' Avant-Garde Cinema Festival, the favorite institution of the Greek Film Archive, is returning after four years of absence. The 9th Athens' Avant-Garde Cinema Festival will take place from October 18 to October 28 at The Greek Film Archive Foundation, offering many surprises and aspiring to bring out what is the freshest and most pioneering of today's world cinema. The festival is preparing an extensive tribute to the work of leading American filmmaker Mark Rappaport, known mainly for his unconventional film essays.
On October 26th and 27th, within the framework of the 9th Athens' Avant-Garde Cinema Festival, ANINA by Alcaeus Spyrou will be presented for the first time to the Greek audience.
A container ship is not an inanimate object. The ship that travels thousands of miles on the high seas is full of life, stories, tragedy and hope. The harbours reached, the industrial landscape one encounters, the cargo that floats in an endless ocean.
ANINA is a psycho-geographic film essay, documenting the ethnographic tendencies of the Industrial Landscape and its malevolent stature over the individual.
The Shipping Industry's ever-shifting landscape, affecting even this interaction you are having with the text, crafts its own mythology.
Alcaeus Spyrou (b.1991) is a lens-captured visual artist, researching the cinematic image and the psyche of contemporary migration. Born in Albania and raised in Athens, his migrant upbringing would focus his gaze towards shifting landscapes. He studied BA Fine Art at Middlesex University in London and has been awarded the John Walker Prize for outstanding Academic Achievement.
Alcaeus’s work has been widely presented in numerous exhibitions such as Liverpool Biennial, Bloomberg New Contemporaries, European Media Art Festival, the Whitechapel Gallery, London; Nunnery Gallery, London; IndieLisboa International Film Festival and Athens Avant Garde Film Festival among others. He is currently studying MA Artistic Research at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague.
